Where Paris Meets Celebration: An Intimate Birthday Night at CQ Brasserie

There are evenings that arrive with a quiet sense of promise, the kind that ask for a setting worthy of the moment. My recent birthday night felt precisely like that. Not a grand spectacle, but something more personal.

On a balmy Thursday evening, I chose this lively brasserie as the setting to celebrate my 42nd birthday, accompanied by my significant other and my closest friend. The choice could not have been more fitting. What unfolded over the course of the evening went beyond just another meal. It evolved into a vivid, textured experience that blended indulgence, warmth, and an unmistakable sense of occasion.

Dubai by all means offers no dearth of options for such special occasions, yet CQ Brasserie felt like the right choice even before we stepped through its doors. We had already been to Girl & The Goose earlier.

Girl & the Goose and CQ French Brasserie are managed and operated by Rosy Hospitality, a homegrown Dubai hospitality group founded by Rowan and Ziad Kamel. So before anything, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Ziad for the opportunity to experience such a thoughtfully executed and compelling concept.

There is a clear sense of intent behind the CQ concept, one that translates seamlessly into the guest experience, from the considered pacing of the menu to the balance between energy and intimacy in the room. Ziad’s vision is evident in every intricate detail of CQ French Brasserie. Nothing feels incidental. Each element, from the food to the service to the atmosphere, is aligned with a singular vision of understated elegance and genuine hospitality.

CQ Brasserie, set within the ever-evolving culinary landscape of Dubai and located at the Grand Millennium Al Barsha, is more than another restaurant. CQ is a mood, a celebration of Parisian spirit refracted through the polished lens of a modern cosmopolitan city.

From the moment we arrived, the energy was unmistakable. It was Thursday, ladies night, and the brasserie was in full swing. Every table seemed occupied, the room alive with conversation, laughter, and the hum of conversation blended seamlessly with the clinking of glasses. There was a festive electricity in the air, yet for all its popularity, the space never felt overwhelming. There was a sense of control beneath the vibrancy, a carefully maintained balance between liveliness and comfort.

The ladies night offering is particularly compelling. Priced at AED 141 per lady, it includes one main course and free flowing wine from 7pm to 11pm on Thursdays. It is a thoughtfully curated package that encourages guests to settle in and enjoy the evening at an unhurried pace. Watching the room, it was clear that this offering has become a cornerstone of the brasserie’s weekly rhythm, drawing in a stylish crowd that appreciates both value and atmosphere.

The interiors deserve their own moment of appreciation. CQ Brasserie captures the essence of a classic French dining room while remaining distinctly contemporary. Warm lighting casts a flattering glow across polished surfaces, while plush seating invites guests to linger. There is a certain theatricality to the space, but it is understated and elegant rather than ostentatious. It feels like the kind of place where memories are made, which made it all the more fitting for a birthday celebration.

The Starters

We began our evening with a selection of starters that set a confident tone for what was to follow. The Salmon Tartare arrived first, delicately presented and visually striking. The fish was impeccably fresh, its natural richness enhanced by subtle seasoning that allowed its clean flavor to shine. There was a pleasing balance between texture and taste, with each bite offering a gentle interplay of softness and brightness. It was a refined opening that spoke of careful sourcing and thoughtful preparation.

Next came the Grilled Octopus, a dish that often reveals a kitchen’s technical precision. Here, it was executed with finesse. The octopus was tender without losing its structural integrity, lightly charred to impart a smoky depth that complemented its natural sweetness. The accompanying elements were restrained, allowing the star ingredient to remain at the forefront. It was a dish that felt both rustic and sophisticated, a hallmark of confident cooking.

The French Onion Soup Gratinée followed, bringing with it a sense of comforting familiarity. Served bubbling hot, with a beautifully melted layer of cheese crowning the bowl, it was everything one hopes for from this classic. The broth was rich and deeply flavored, the result of patient caramelization and careful seasoning. Each spoonful delivered warmth and depth, making it an especially satisfying choice amid the lively atmosphere of the evening.

The Salads

Moving into the salads, the Salade César offered a crisp and refreshing counterpoint to the richness of the starters. The lettuce was fresh and vibrant, the dressing creamy yet balanced, with just the right amount of tang. It was a well-executed rendition of a beloved classic, elevated by attention to detail and quality ingredients.

The Salade de Chèvre Chaud brought a more indulgent note to the table. The warm goat cheese was beautifully textured, its creamy interior contrasting with a lightly crisp exterior. Paired with fresh greens and a delicate dressing, it created a harmonious blend of flavors that felt both satisfying and elegant. It was the kind of dish that invites slow appreciation.

The Burrata Provençale rounded out the salad course with a distinctly Mediterranean flair. The burrata itself was luscious and rich, its creamy center spilling out to mingle with the accompanying elements. The Provençal accents added brightness and a hint of rustic charm, resulting in a dish that was both comforting and vibrant. It was a celebration of simplicity done well.

The Main event

For the main course, the Wagyu Entrecôte stood as a centerpiece of indulgence. With a marble score of 9+, this high-quality ribeye delivered on every expectation. The meat was beautifully cooked, showcasing a perfect balance between tenderness and flavor. Each bite melted effortlessly, releasing a depth of richness that lingered on the palate. It was a dish that exemplified the pleasures of premium ingredients handled with care.

The Duck Confit Framboise offered a contrasting profile, combining the richness of slow-cooked duck with the subtle sweetness of raspberry. The duck was tender and deeply flavorful, its crisp skin providing a delightful textural contrast. The framboise element added a nuanced brightness that lifted the dish, preventing it from feeling heavy. It was a thoughtful composition that demonstrated both creativity and restraint.

The Grilled Chicken and Mushroom Tagliatelle brought a comforting, hearty element to the table. The pasta was perfectly cooked, its texture providing an ideal canvas for the savory combination of chicken and mushrooms. The flavors were well integrated, creating a dish that felt both satisfying and approachable. It was a reminder that simplicity, when executed well, can be just as compelling as more elaborate creations.

The Sweet Indulgence

Dessert is often where a meal reveals its true character, and CQ Brasserie did not disappoint. The Pain Perdue was a highlight, offering a luxurious interpretation of a classic. The texture was rich and custardy, with a golden exterior that added just the right amount of contrast. It was indulgent without being overwhelming, a fitting sweet note to conclude the evening.

The Tartine Chocolat and Beurre Salé provided a more playful indulgence. The combination of chocolate and salted butter is timeless, and here it was executed with finesse. The richness of the chocolate was balanced by the subtle salinity, creating a harmonious blend that lingered pleasantly. It was a dessert that invited both nostalgia and delight.

The Service

Service throughout the evening was assured and attentive, even at full capacity. A particular mention must be made of Vai, the Burmese waiter who looked after our table with quiet precision. He anticipated needs without intrusion, moved with confidence through the busy floor, and maintained a warmth that felt entirely genuine. His presence added a personal dimension to the evening, elevating the experience in a way that only thoughtful service can.

The Verdict

As the night unfolded, CQ Brasserie revealed itself as more than a place to dine. It is somewhere that understands rhythm, where food, atmosphere, and service move in sync. Celebrating my 42nd birthday here felt effortless and well judged, shaped as much by the setting as by the company.

In a city defined by abundance, CQ Brasserie distinguishes itself through clarity and restraint. It delivers exactly what it promises, with confidence and consistency. As we stepped out into the night, the energy of the room still carrying behind us, it was clear that this was not simply a good evening, but a memorable one, and one worth returning to.

CQ Brasserie has a way of drawing you back, not just for the food or the atmosphere, but for the feeling it creates. It is, in every sense, a celebration of good taste and good company, and for that, it will remain a cherished part of my birthday memories.
